Bringing Water to Life: The Journey of the Kaiti-II Water Project

In the heart of Makueni County, nestled in the vibrant town of Wote, the Kaiti-II Water Project began with a vision—transforming access to clean water for the local community. Commissioned by USAID-Stawi and entrusted to Jakimo Infrastructure (EA) Limited, this initiative embarked on a mission to deliver reliable water infrastructure and sustainable energy solutions.

A Vision in Motion

On a sunny day, September 25th, 2024, the project site was officially handed over, signaling the start of a transformative journey. With a budget of Ksh. 12,024,710 and unwavering determination, the team rolled up their sleeves, beginning the works on September 30th. In just a few short weeks, critical milestones were achieved, laying the foundation for long-term impact.

Building the Future: What We Accomplished

The scope of the Kaiti-II Water Project was ambitious yet essential. The key components included:

  • Laying 1.75 km of HDPE Pipes: Stretching from the Kaiti-II sump to the Sarova Center, these robust pipes ensure the efficient transport of water.
  • Water Kiosk Installation: Featuring a 5,000-liter water tank and advanced plumbing, the kiosk serves as a vital access point for the community.
  • Harnessing Solar Power: Fifty-six solar panels were installed, supported by a steel structure, delivering renewable energy to power water systems and floodlights.
  • Constructing an Elevated Water Tank: A 12-meter high, 24m³ steel water tank was erected, tested for watertight integrity, disinfected, and commissioned.

Quality at Every Step

Ensuring excellence was paramount. Material tests were conducted meticulously, from concrete mix designs using Blue Triangle Cement to sourcing aggregates from local quarries. Each component passed stringent KEBS quality standards, reinforcing the project’s commitment to durability and safety.

Facing Challenges, Finding Solutions

Even as progress surged forward, the journey was not without its adjustments. Modifications to the Bill of Quantities were necessary, such as upgrading the specifications for high-density polyethylene pipes and increasing the inverter capacity for the solar pumping system to meet evolving project demands.

Progress So Far: 60% Complete and Counting

As of October 29th, 2024, remarkable progress has been made:

  • 1,500 meters of pipeline successfully laid.
  • Solar structure foundation completed, with superstructure fitting underway.
  • Water kiosk roof slab casted, with walls taking shape.
  • Steel water tank fabrication progressing off-site, while the on-site water tower foundation is set.

A Safe and Steady Path Forward

With zero reported incidents or accidents, the Kaiti-II Water Project exemplifies the harmony of efficiency and safety, thanks to a dedicated team committed to delivering on their promise.

Looking Ahead: A Promise to the Community

The Kaiti-II Water Project is more than a construction effort; it is a story of transformation, sustainability, and resilience. As we move toward completion, the community of Wote can look forward to a future where access to clean water is no longer a distant dream but an everyday reality. Together, we are building more than infrastructure—we are building a legacy.
